Hawks include the families Accipitrinae and Buteo, although birds in the Buteo family are called buzzards in other parts of the world.
Accipiters include goshawks, sparrowhawks, sharp-shinned hawks. This subfamily are mainly woodland birds with long tails and high visual acuity. They usually hunt by ambushing their prey from a concealed perch.
Members of the Buteo group are larger-winged and shorter-tailed. They often soar and descend or pounce on their prey rather than ambushing them from a concealed perch like the Accipiters.
